NOT ALL MONSTERS
LIKE TO SCARE
Not All Monsters Like to Scare is a children’s book about gender equality. The book teaches children that anyone can enjoy any activity regardless of their gender, ethnicity, or background. The story follows Rowan, a monster who likes to scare and make fun of monsters who enjoy different activities such as cooking or playing sports. The character design is based on monsters that don't have a specific gender. The names for the characters are gender neutral and allow for gender fluidity in the story.
Inspired by Dr. Seuss’ style of illustration the art in the book has no straight lines and uses dull colours for backgrounds and brighter colours for the characters. The color scheme used on the monsters combines colors that are stereotypical feminine or masculine, such as red and purple, for example.
